Far Away Friends

Whenever a new school year starts, I always think of the great friends I made over the years, whether it was in college or high school. Since graduating in 2015, it has been difficult to see these friends every week, let alone every day. As I attended Syracuse University, I met students from all over the country and am happy to say I have friends everywhere now! After graduating, all of my close friends moved to new places, some close, some far, and that made it even more difficult. They moved to Los Angeles, Boston, Buffalo, Jacksonville, Washington DC, and even New York City (this one was a little easier for me to get to). I got lucky that my home friends ended up staying in the area, but I still made a point of seeing them as much as I could.

When it comes to "far away friends", I think there are a few tips that are simple enough for everyone to follow. I will admit, I am still practicing my own rules, but there is only so much you can do! If the friendship is worth it, the effort should come naturally.

Here are some of the tips I try to follow:

1. Try to call one friend a week.
-It does not need to be the same friend each week, but this will get you in the habit of calling someone up to chat and the deed can then be returned

2. Group Message
- I am the absolute worst with these. My six closest friends and I have a group message from when we lived together at school that we continued to use after we graduated. They are all pros at the group message, I am not. I always fall behind in them, then I do not know where to jump in or put my two sense. I apologize to all of them, and continue to be terrible at group messages.

3. Send something small
- Two of my best friends live out on the west coast, so it is safe to say I NEVER see them, as I live on the East Coast. If I am ever cruising through the Internet and see something that reminds me of them, my next stop is usually Amazon to see if I can send them it! (Amazon Prime is the BEST!!) This shows that you are still thinking about them, even if you do not have the time to call them. Honestly, this little "tip" is one of my favorites because it is so fun!

4. Schedule a date
- I know what you're thinking, how can you "set up a date" if they are far away! It is simple, find time that fits in both your schedules either today or next month. Just find one day that works and Skype or FaceTime! You finally have the opportunity to get that Apartment Tour and see all their new things!

5. Visit
-This may be the easiest and most tricky tasks. Planning a trip can be expensive, but it is so worth it! I have visited a few friends at their new homes and it takes time to plan, but the memory is worth it. It may take time to plan a trip or it may take twenty minutes, but if this is possible at any time, I highly recommend it.

PS - Sorry this is so late! I've been meaning to put up a post for the past few days, but I have been busy with family and traveling.
